The
Big Issue, Leeds
The Big Issue in the North purchased a nondescript
speculatively built three storey building in the city centre.
Allen Tod Architecture was selected by competitive interview to produce
a well-designed environment for their vendors, which
it is hoped, will lift their spirits and expectations.
The design inserts a new stair and lift and organises well-lit spaces
around this core. The widespread use of glazed screens will ensure
that the interiors are open and transparent.
Externally our idea was to create a local landmark and proclaim the
building's use. A layered assembly of steel and glass stairs fixed
to the middle bay of the building, acts as signage. It will be back
lit in blue light. It will become known as Leeds "Big" Blue.
