Leeds Design Innovation
Centre
In 1990 Allen Tod completed the radical conversion of a redundant
steel framed warehouse to create the Design Innovation Centre, a concept
jointly developed by Allen Tod and the developer, which provides flexible
studio, office and workshop spaces for designers and design related
businesses, around conference facilities and gallery/exhibition space.
The development took advantage of a riverside location in the centre
of Leeds known to be attractive to designers, and provided all the
riverside offices and studios with external balconies suspended over
the river together with a full length balcony at ground level, much
used for office gatherings and parties.
The building's commercial success has paved the way for the subsequent
renaissance of this stretch of the Leeds riverside.
The project has received the RIBA
Regional Award for Architecture and The Leeds
Award for Architecture.
