Dunshaughlin
Warehouse
Allen
Tod has been commissioned to renovate and develop a 19th Century historic
workhouse outside Dublin.
The project will include restoring Dunshaughlin Workhouse and its
grounds to provide a mixture of new housing and accommodation within
the existing structure.
The workhouse is a large stone rubble building based on
a standard pattern by George Wilkinson. Restoration work will include
reinstating beautiful stone cross-mullioned windows and Tudor redbrick
chimneys to enhance the original frontage. The renovation will also
maintain the historic integrity of the building, whilst offering well-proportioned,
good quality housing.
Over 100 new homes will be built in small clusters within the grounds
and large green areas of open space will complement the quality of
the development.
The workhouse dates back to 1841 and was built to accommodate 400
of the poorest people during the Irish famine. It was closed down
in 1922 and has since been used as a factory, school and courthouse.
