Kiln Warehouse, Newark

Owned by British Waterways, this derelict, burnt out warehouse dated 1857 is possibly the earliest mass concrete building in Britain, and is listed Grade II*.

The challenge was to produce a commercially viable building that maintained the valuable historic qualities of the existing building shell.

Allen Tod developed a solution that stabilised the existing mass concrete walls and placed a new "building within a building" in steel and glass.

The project was funded by British Waterways, English Heritage and English Partnerships. The new building
was completed in December 1998 and received two
Civic Trust Awards.
