Leeds College of Music
Allen Tod Architectures design for Leeds College of Music produces
a highly distinctive and iconic building on a site currently occupied
by a car park for just 12 cars.
The building will house expanded teaching facilities for the college
on the lower floors and much needed student accommodation on the upper
floors.
A dark masonry base with strong angular forms roots the building firmly
to the ground. Above this, the building is clad in a vivid mosaic
of glass cladding panels.
This orchestration of colour is seen as a giant piece of public art
and can be composed by the commissioning of a piece of music.
Despite the ambition of the proposal, the costs have been kept to
a reasonable level by applying standardised products in an innovative
way. This lateral thinking has won the College a significant space
to expand within a limited footprint.
