Marie Curie Cancer
Care, Bradford
Allen Tod has completed a new hospice for Marie
Curie Cancer Care in Bradford.
The new centre replaces the existing Marie Curie hospice at Ardenlea
in Ilkley and includes a 16 bed in-patient unit, day-care and out-patient
facilities as well as accommodation for administration, fund-raising
and education resources.
The building meets the complex technical requirements of a specialist
medical centre yet creates a comforting, reassuring and pleasant environment,
both internal and external, for patients, staff and visitors.
Allen Tod has brought to the project knowledge of the latest research
into the vital role played by nature and landscape in healthcare through
a partnership with the highly respected Swedish Landscape Architect,
Professor Par Gustafsson.
Research has shown that good landscape design can be beneficial to
child development, recovery from illness and general physical and
emotional well-being.
The proposals make maximum use of the location and topography of the
site to create a series of landscaped spaces that are integrated with
the building and provide a varied, stimulating environment for the
building users with panoramic views over the city of Bradford.
