Robin Hood's
Bay
In 1999 the National Trust acquired the Marine Research
Laboratory built in the 1960s by Leeds University, a building
that was much disliked locally, particularly because of its prominent
position.
Its construction necessitated the demolition of the three former fishermans
cottages that were converted in the mid 19th Century to form a coastguard
station and watch tower.
Our task was to re-create from historic photographs the original shell
of the coastguard station, to house a joint National Trust and North
York Moors Visitor Centre, with an education/community room, and holiday
apartment.
The watch tower and gable wall utilise re-claimed stone and roof
tiles. New stone from the local quarry has been used for the rest
of the building, and lime washed in keeping with the original coastguard
station.
