St. Leonards Hospice,
York
Allen Tod was appointed by St Leonard's Hospice to develop a scheme
to expand and improve its existing facilities, built 20 years earlier.
Allen Tod developed a solution that reused the existing building for
expanded day-care, care support and family facilities and moved the
patient care accommodation to a new building, which includes a 20
bed inpatient unit and expanded administration facilities.
The relationship between patient bedroom and garden is maintained
by a generous balcony which provides the rooms with sheltered out
door space and views to the countryside beyond.
The new building is linked to the existing by two new link corridors
which allow the hospice to separate public and private circulation.
The landscape design recognises people's needs to be close to nature
and the therapeutic effect that landscape has on people's well-being.
Two contrasting courtyards are formed: the staff courtyard is calm
and relaxing and the main courtyard, overlooked by patient rooms and
reception area offers a more vibrant sensory experience.
Garden areas adjacent to the day-care facilities provide active horticultural
therapy with raised planting beds.
